Vault Bar, Nelson Street, Douglas

Chapters restaurant in far Victoria Street has closed but the owner has submitted a planning application to convert offices next to Loweys Estate Agent on Nelson Street into the Vault Bar with real ale.

Pubs

The Central in Peel has just been granted a new licence (the old licence was surrendered) – Bill Smith from Isle of Man CAMRA clearly documented observations for consideration at the licensing court hearing in support of Jane Smith from the Sidings in Castletown.  The general plan is to open on Thursday with 3 real ales such as Skipton Copper Dragon and Everards Tiger and, longer term, introduce a cask ale on stillage to serve real ales straight from the cask.

A letter from a CAMRA member was considered in a planning application to convert the Bridge in Laxey to apartments and the planning application has been rejected subject to appeal.

The Bay View in Port St Mary has closed again.  I don’t know any other details.

In case you missed recent news, the Commercial in Ramsey is open again.

Falcon’s Nest – Thanks

“We’d like to thank everyone for supporting our first annual beer festival.  We feel it went well.  The ale voted best of festival was the Abbeydale Moonshine.  We have noted all the comments and we will make it even better next year!”

CAMRA LocAle Scheme and the Isle of Man

It was decided at the Regional Meeting in May 2010 that the LocAle scheme was not relevant in the UK.  Almost all Isle of Man real ale pubs sell at least 1 real ale from a local brewery.

CAMRA LocAle logo

CAMRA LocAle is the accreditation scheme to promote pubs that sell locally-brewed real ale, reducing the number of ‘beer miles’ and supporting local breweries.

The scheme builds on a growing consumer demand for quality local produce and an increased awareness of ‘green’ issues.

The CAMRA LocAle scheme was created in 2007 by CAMRA’s Nottingham branch which wanted to help support the tradition of brewing within Nottinghamshire, following the demise of local brewer Hardys and Handsons.

Everyone benefits from local pubs stocking locally-brewed real ale…

  • Public houses as stocking local real ales can increase pub visits
  • Consumers who enjoy greater beer choice and diversity
  • Local brewers who gain from increased sales
  • The local economy because more money is spent and retained locally
  • The environment due to fewer ‘beer miles’ resulting in less road congestion and pollution
  • Tourism due to an increased sense of local identity and pride – let’s celebrate what makes our locality different
